The easiest way to check for a leaking pipe is to use the low flow indicator on the water meter.
The ability for the system to automatically shut off the water source if a leak is detected is extremely useful.

If it is moving you likely have a leak.
If it is moving you have a continuous leak.
If your water meter doesn t have a flow indicator or you would like to determine the amount of water that s leaking write down the numbers that appear on the meter followed by the number on the hand of the large rotary dial.
After years of wear and tear a water meter can register an incorrect number.
If you walk out to your water meter and notice the area around it is wet and soggy or you see standing water and puddles then you have a leak with the water from the main line coming into your home.
If you think you have a leak but your leak indicator and sweep hand are not moving write down the odometer reading and come back to your water meter in about 30 minutes to re record the odometer reading.
Then wait for 25 to 30 minutes at least.
But you can always have the water meter tested by the utility company or a plumber to make sure of its accuracy.
If the difference between the two readings is greater than zero you have a small.

If it is moving you have a continuous leak.

If you are not sure if you are looking at the leak indicator and nothing is moving have someone turn on a faucet to see the difference.
If not there is no water meter leak.
